One of Turkey’s Largest Earthquakes
On February 6, 2023, Turkey witnessed one of the greatest disasters in its modern history. This devastating earthquake, centered in Kahramanmaraş, shook our country profoundly with two powerful tremors measuring 7.8 and 7.6 in magnitude. In addition to Kahramanmaraş, the earthquake caused massive destruction across 11 provinces, including Gaziantep, Adıyaman, Hatay, Malatya, Adana, Şanlıurfa, Diyarbakır, Osmaniye, and Kilis. Tens of thousands of people lost their lives, and hundreds of thousands were injured. The devastating toll of this catastrophe led to the collapse of thousands of buildings in affected cities and the displacement of millions.
Immediately after the earthquake, numerous civil society organizations and volunteer teams mobilized to extend aid to the victims. As IFCED, we took part in the field from the second day, providing emergency relief services in various areas. With the material and emotional support of our volunteers, we strived to reach and assist as many people as possible during these difficult days.
Roles Undertaken by IFCED in the Earthquake Zone
Hot Meals: To address the need for hot meals, one of the primary needs post-earthquake, we set up kitchens in tent cities, delivering meals to thousands daily. Especially in the early days when access to food was limited, we took on a crucial role in providing hot meals.
Clothing and Heating Support: In the harsh winter conditions, we distributed clothing and blankets to protect earthquake survivors from the cold. We provided winter clothing such as coats, scarves, hats, and gloves to help those in need in the area find warmth.
Shelter: To address urgent shelter needs, we established container homes, offering temporary housing solutions to the affected individuals. These container homes provided a safe and temporary haven in the regions most impacted by the earthquake.
Food and Aid Packages: To ensure the rapid provision of essential food and supplies, we prepared aid packages. By distributing these packages, which included dry food, cleaning materials, and hygiene products, we helped hundreds of families meet their daily needs.
Container Preschool: To alleviate the impact of the earthquake on children, we established container preschools. This provided children with a safe environment to continue their education and receive psychosocial support.
Continued Support During Ramadan: Our support to the affected areas was not limited to the initial weeks. During the first Ramadan following the disaster, we continued to reach those in need with iftar meals and food packages. During this sacred month, we upheld the importance of solidarity and shared our bread with our brothers and sisters in the region.
Our Core Principle in Relief Efforts: At IFCED, we place great importance on reliability and transparency in all our aid activities. We operate with an accountability principle at every stage of our assistance, ensuring that all donations reach the correct recipients. We take every necessary measure to support those in need accurately and efficiently, managing our process with meticulous care. In emergencies, we carry the responsibility and awareness of being present on the ground, never hesitating to extend a helping hand.
As IFCED, we have been honored to stand by our brothers and sisters in the region during these challenging times, bringing them hope. With our hearts and our efforts, we will continue to be by their side until the wounds are healed.
Thanks to your urgent support, we have delivered crucial aid to those impacted by the Turkey earthquake.
