MONGOLIA’S DREADED STEPPE DISASTER: THE DZUD CRISIS
At the beginning of 2024, Mongolia faced one of the harshest realities of its steppe climate: the Dzud disaster. Characterized by severe winter conditions, Dzud brought plummeting temperatures and heavy snowfall, blocking access to food for livestock and devastating the livelihoods of herders. Regions such as Gobi-Altay, Zavkhan, Bayan-Ölgii, and Hovd were particularly affected, with thousands of animals perishing from cold and starvation. This tragedy left tens of thousands of people without their primary source of income, plunging many Mongolian families into a survival crisis.
The severe consequences of Dzud created a significant threat for thousands of families struggling to make ends meet during the harsh winter months. Civil society organizations and aid groups quickly mobilized to provide solidarity and relief during this difficult time.
We Were There as IFCED
In response to this disaster, we mobilized alongside our local partners in Mongolia. With swift and effective measures, we aimed to alleviate the impact of this crisis.
Coal Support
To protect families from the extreme cold, one of the most devastating effects of Dzud, we distributed coal to those in need. Our coal assistance supported families, orphanages, and schools in regions with limited heating resources, helping them survive the harsh winter.
Food Packages and Qurbani Meat
We delivered essential food supplies and Qurbani meat to families affected by Dzud. In areas where livestock losses were significant, Qurbani meat provided crucial support for families with limited access to protein, helping them meet their nutritional needs throughout the winter.
Hot Meals and Essential Supplies
With the heavy impact on livestock and livelihoods, we provided hot meals and basic supplies to families in need. This assistance also supported children whose education was disrupted by the disaster, ensuring they received essential nourishment during these challenging times.
At IFCED, we uphold principles of reliability and transparency in all our humanitarian efforts. We carefully manage processes to ensure donor contributions reach the right places and address the most urgent needs. In crises like Dzud, our teams work tirelessly with dedication and compassion, standing by those in need at every stage of relief efforts.
We are proud to have brought hope to those who lost their livelihoods and homes in Mongolia during the Dzud disaster. We will continue to embody this spirit of solidarity and strive to reach those in need whenever and wherever disaster strikes.
